What is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma is a rare, chronic autoimmune disease that causes hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues. In some cases, it can also affect internal organs like the lungs, heart, kidneys, and digestive system.

There are two main types:

• Localized Scleroderma – mainly affects the skin.

• Systemic Sclerosis – can affect both the skin and internal organs.

 

Common Symptoms:

• Thickening or hardening of the skin (especially on hands and face)

• Cold sensitivity and color changes in fingers/toes (Raynaud’s phenomenon)

• Joint pain or stiffness

• Heartburn or difficulty swallowing

• Shortness of breath (if lungs are affected)

 

Who is Affected?

• Most common in women aged 30–50

• Can occur in people of all races and ages

 

Diagnosis and Treatment:

Diagnosis is based on symptoms, physical exam, and specialized blood tests. While there is no cure, treatment focuses on:

• Managing symptoms (e.g., pain, skin care, digestion)

• Preventing complications

• Slowing disease progression with medications like immunosuppressants or vasodilators

Living with Scleroderma:

• Protect your hands from cold and injury

• Moisturize skin daily

• Eat small, soft meals to ease swallowing

• Stay active with gentle exercise

• Keep regular checkups to monitor organ function
