What is Pseudogout?

Pseudogout, also known as Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease (CPPD), is a type of arthritis caused by the buildup of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the joints. It can cause sudden, painful swelling and inflammation similar to gout.

Common Symptoms:

  • Sudden, painful joint swelling, often in the knees

  • Redness and warmth over the affected joint

  • Stiffness and limited range of motion

  • Symptoms may last for days to weeks

Commonly Affected Joints:

  • Knees (most common)

  • Wrists

  • Shoulders

  • Ankles

  • Elbows

Risk Factors:

  • Aging (most common over age 60)

  • Joint injury or surgery

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Hyperparathyroidism, hemochromatosis, or other metabolic disorders

  • Family history of CPPD

Diagnosis:

  • Joint fluid analysis (identifies calcium pyrophosphate crystals)

  • X-rays showing crystal deposits in the cartilage

  • Blood tests to rule out other causes

Treatment Options:

  • NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) to reduce pain and inflammation

  • Colchicine to prevent or treat flare-ups

  • Corticosteroids (oral or injected) for severe attacks

  • Treatment of underlying metabolic conditions if present

Self-Care & Management:

  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling

  • Rest the affected joint during a flare

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Regular exercise to support joint health

  • Stay hydrated
