What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica? 

Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder that causes muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders and hips. It most commonly affects older adults, typically over the age of 50.

Common Symptoms:

• Pain and stiffness in the shoulders, neck, and hips

• Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes

• Fatigue and low energy

• Mild fever or malaise

• Difficulty raising arms or standing after sitting

Who is Affected?

• Usually affects adults over 50 years old

• More common in women than men

• Higher prevalence in people of Northern European descent

Associated Condition:

• About 10-20% of patients may also develop Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA), a condition involving inflammation of the blood vessels, which may cause headaches, vision problems, or jaw pain.

Diagnosis:

• Based on symptoms and physical exam

• Blood tests to check for inflammation (ESR, CRP)

• Rule out other conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, lupus)

Treatment:

• Corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone) are the primary treatment and typically bring rapid relief

• Dosage is gradually tapered over months

• Monitoring for side effects of steroids is essential

• Calcium and vitamin D supplements may be recommended
