What is Lupus (SLE)?

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), commonly called Lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissues by mistake. It can affect many parts of the body, including the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, heart, and brain.
 

Common Symptoms:

• Fatigue

• Joint pain and swelling

• Skin rashes (often a butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks)

• Fever

• Hair loss

• Sun sensitivity

• Kidney problems

Symptoms can vary greatly between people and may come and go in flares.

Who Gets Lupus?

Lupus can affect anyone but is more common in:

• Women (especially between ages 15–45)

• People of African, Asian, Hispanic, or Native American descent

Diagnosis and Treatment:

There’s no single test for Lupus. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, blood tests, and imaging. Treatment focuses on:

• Reducing inflammation (NSAIDs, corticosteroids)

• Controlling the immune system (immunosuppressants, biologics)

• Preventing flares and organ damage

Living with Lupus:

• Get regular medical care

• Protect yourself from the sun

• Stay active with gentle exercise

• Rest when needed

• Manage stress and take medications as prescribed
