What is Inflammatory Arthritis?

Inflammatory arthritis refers to a group of autoimmune diseases that cause inflammation in the joints and sometimes other organs. Unlike osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear, inflammatory arthritis occurs when the immune system attacks healthy joint tissues.

Common types include:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

  • Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA)

  • Ankylosing Spondylitis

  • Lupus-related arthritis

  • Reactive Arthritis

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling

  • Stiffness that lasts more than 30 minutes in the morning

  • Fatigue and general malaise

  • Redness or warmth in joints

  • Involvement of small joints (fingers, wrists, toes) or spine (in spondyloarthritis)

What Causes It?

Inflammatory arthritis is caused by an overactive immune system that mistakenly attacks the joints. While the exact cause is unknown, genetics, environmental triggers, and infections may play a role.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on:

  • Medical history and physical exam

  • Blood tests (e.g., RF, anti-CCP, ANA, HLA-B27)

  • Imaging (X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI) to detect joint damage or inflammation

Treatment & Management

Early treatment can reduce joint damage and improve quality of life.

Medications may include:

  • NSAIDs – to relieve pain and inflammation

  • Corticosteroids – for short-term symptom control

  • DMARDs (e.g., methotrexate) – to slow disease progression

  • Biologics – advanced therapies that target specific immune pathways

Self-Care Tips:

  • Stay physically active with low-impact exercises

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Use joint protection strategies

  • Stop smoking – it worsens inflammation and treatment response

Why Follow-Up Matters

Inflammatory arthritis is a chronic condition that requires ongoing monitoring. Regular visits help track disease activity, manage medications, and prevent complications.
